I have over 20 years experience writing, editing, and managing educational book projects for Grades K-12. I work fast, and can transform complex guidelines into beautiful, client-pleasing content.

My areas of expertise are: ELA; ELL/ESL scaffolding, sheltering, and instruction; primary grades; history and government; and science. I especially love writing effective, relatable fiction and nonfiction, calibrated to age group and reading level.

Whether your content needs are print or digital -- teacher- or student-facing -- I am the writer for you!

Fountas and PInnell Literacy Project

My assignment was to create authentic literature that would engage young readers, rising above the quality of standard leveled readers in basal programs. These were not books contrived for the purpose of teaching reading. All manuscript went through a rigorous editorial review, each draft honed to achieve the most fun, surprising, well-written, creative, and interesting story, calibrated and carefully leveled so teachers could choose just the right books for their students. The fictional narratives all have strong voices, memorable characters, and unpredictable plots that get kids excited to turn the pages. Nonfiction topics are all high-interest and kid-friendly. As a bonus, the accompanying art and photos are top notch. I wrote 16 books for the project.

Testimonials

I had the good fortune to work with Lisa on a leveled book project for kindergarten. The timeline was aggressive (to say the least) and Lisa was the editor for several grades in addition to mine. Despite the pressure, Lisa kept the ball in front of her and responded with timely, insightful edits that ensured a successful product.

Lisa Lerner is my go-to freelancer for student materials. She understands the requirements, and comes out with something that is fun for the kids and does what it has to do instructionally (not easy!) She is a pleasure to work with, takes direction, and works quickly. She always hits the mark. I highly recommend her.
— Ellen Tarlow, Director of Language and Literacy, Scholastic Early Childhood
Lisa is the consummate professional writer. She knows intuitively what children of differing ages like to read and she produces engaging fiction and nonfiction for those readers. In fiction, her animal fantasy stories are delightful and her realistic fiction stories are geared towards an older student’s life. Her nonfiction books are detailed and fascinating, including one of our favorites—an interview with a teacher about her Arctic adventures. Lisa is an exceptional person to work with; she would add extraordinary value to any team of writers!
